Located only 11 miles from downtown Boston, Lexington has deep colonial roots having been the site of the first shots fired in the American Revolutionary War. First settled in 1642, much of Lexington consisted of farmland where a handful of modernist-style neighborhoods were subsequently built between 1948-1960 including Six Moon Hill, Peacock Farm, & Five Fields. Much of the farmland that remained was later developed in the 1970s for housing and other purposes. Lexington has one of the highest ranking public school systems in the country, and is also home to the oldest standing war memorial in America (The Revolutionary Monument).
