Medford is a city northwest of downtown Boston, abutting the Mystic River. Originally part of Charlestown, it was incorporated as its own city in 1892 and quickly became a hub for manufacturing. Interstate 93, which runs through Medford, was built between 1956-1963. The MBTA Green Line extension is currently under construction, which will eventually bring green line service to Medford as a condition of the Big Dig project. The city is currently serviced by the orange line via Wellington Station in East Medford, and the commuter rail in West Medford Square. The Middlesex Fells Reservation is partially located in the city, and provides a rustic escape for city dwellers.
