It is officially winter and almost 2023. With the new year and cold weather comes indoor home improvement projects, and we have a great one to share! Floating shelves are an excellent way to add extra storage while saving floor space. They also add an element of design and can be used as a display shelf for decor. Below are four steps on how to build floating shelves yourself.

1. Cut Your Wood
The first step is to cut your wood to size. Measure the area you would like to hang your shelves and determine the appropriate shelving size. You will also need to decide how many shelves to make and cut them accordingly. You can use any type of saw that you have, but we recommend using a circle saw. You can also buy precut wood if it is available.
2. Sand Your Wood
Next you will need to sand down the wood to slightly round out the edges and even out the surface. You can use a sander for a quicker process, but fine-grit sandpaper will work as well. Then you will need to add 3-4 coats of sealer evenly sprayed on the wood.
3. Attach Brackets To The Wall
Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the area of the wall you want to hang your shelves. Use a level to ensure the brackets are even and attach your brackets to the wall using a drill and screws.
4. Attach Shelves To Brackets
Line up the shelves to place on the brackets and mark the holes on the shelves with a pencil. Pre drill holes in the shelves at the pencil marks but do not drill the holes all the way through shelf. Place the shelves on the brackets and use a screwdriver to secure them.
We love floating shelves to add space to any room. These can be used in the kitchen for extra dishes, bathroom for towels or living room for books and photos. Enjoy a home improvement project this winter and update your home for the coming year!
